I think you're wrong on this one, when I lived in Ireland I always got the impression that people were just looking for things Irish to show their pride in (just look at our sports stars and the reception they get)!

A question, what was the response to the UN parade like, I saw a short video and there seemed to be a good crowd at what appeared to be quite a small parade?

I was in the 100 man guard for an t-Uactarán, not among a bunch of Schoolgirls("I swear your Honour!") The people who were laughing were probably Ex members or their families who came out to see the DF only to see a bunch of muppets who can't keep step on O'Connel St. with a band keeping the pace! and half the country watching them.

It wasn't just the NS that were out of step and the whole crowd was laughing, the worst bit had to be the eyes left when almost every group started wandering over to the left and most abandoned the eyes halfway to stop from running into the barriers.

FF was definately not in the Don when the Pope Flew in!!!

Hey FF you must be as old as me then, born 1959? I certainly don't remember you in the 'Don though. I was there from '76 to '85 and being a social type I knew everyone all 'round the base and up in Gormo' 'cos I was a heli. crewman so we used to go all over the patch. Where did you do your basic training?

There were definitely no women here flying the SF260 either during the Pope's visit.

you are right on the money there marine ,the parades should never have been cancelled in the first place . anyone know what year they were stopped. it was probably considered P.C
at the time . they were great publicity for the aircorps and the defence forces overall.

Are you people for real ?? Military Parades ? for what reason ?just to deny someone a day off ! they achieve NOTHING except misery for the people involved !
Perhaps if there were some Military hardware to display there might be a reason ! Otherwise sounds like a reason for all the gentlemen to have a pi** up in the mess at the states expense . yet again !!
the man on the ground yhe real soldier ( if there is any ) wants his time off like every other citizen and not prancing around whatever street or square they decide to have a parade .
Get a life it is 2003 after all a new century has dawned believe it or not !!
Cant believe that too many techs in the don would want any parades ! been ther done that !

As usual you talk great sense Irish Marine. We have allowed the Irish Ba'ath Party take over the role of patriots in this country. Bring back the parades and instil more respect to the great members of the Irish Defence Forces!! I am always envious over how patriotic members of the US Forces are always - ready to die for freedom and their country and ALWAYs supporting and unquestioning of their political masters. In this country most people just knock thieir leaders and nationality. The Parade was the highlight of the year - the Vampires, Landsverk Amoured Cars, Naval Service etc giving their salute to our Commander in Chief. Bertie would, I feel, be very much infavour - I must mention it to him the next time we are together!

cygnet-I dont know many real soldiers who complain about going on parade. I am sure you would complain to the PDFORA, about going on a parade. The bottom line is this union crap has got to go!!!!!!!!! I guess you would complain because the SGT was yelling at you!!!!! The bottom line is new changes have got to implimented- You join the Defence forces because you expect to belong to a great force, well if you join, expect to follow orders and live a life far different than of your fellow civilians!!!!!!!!

Military life-Is fundamantly different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring the Parades back, and if you dont want to complain, I say start kicking people out with Bad Conduct discharges. We dont want moma's boys in the Irish Defence Forces!!!!!!

You are not an ordinary Citizen when you are a member of the Irish Defence Forces, you are a member of an elite organization!!!!! I am also tired of hearing about disipline problem childs, kick them out, they are a cancer to the rest of the troops. If they want to cause trouble, lock them up in the Curragh camp and put them to work-hard labor.

Gosh- I love my Irish Defence Forces!!

Lets hope that some one brings back the Parades soon!!!! ':cool:'
