Red Arrow crashes during Bournemouth Air Festival

 Nine aircraft were taking part in the display but only eight landed safely afterwards A Red Arrow aeroplane has crashed in Dorset following a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival.

The fire service confirmed they were called to an air crash at 13:50 BST near Bournemouth International Airport.

A BBC producer at the scene said he saw only eight of the nine Red Arrows RAF display team's aircraft land on the runway at the annual event.

They had earlier taken part in a display over the seafront. No details are known about possible casualties.

BBC South Today producer Martin Webster said the plane was thought to have crashed in an open area at Throop village, near the Castlepoint shopping centre.

Shaun Spencer-Perkins, who witnessed the crash from Throop Mill, said: "I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15m above the ground racing across the fields.

"It impacted and bounced across the field, made it across the river.

"Members of the public jumped into the water to search for the cockpit.

"We waved down the helicopter, I took off my son's orange jacket and my wife's red jumper to get the attention of the helicopter."

witness say that one of the Hawk aircraft seem to "seperate" from the main formation then subsequently the pilot "Ejected" just before impact  close to Bournmouth Airport

Just been on sky news apparently a red arrow has gone down, they will update as the news comes in. Hopefully nothing serious.
Crashed just outside Bournemouth Airport, near shopping centre. Nine took off, eight have landed.
"Reports are that the pilot has ejected, and was pulled from a nearby river...
They had finished their display and were breaking to land at Hurn when the incident happened.

 I've just got word stating that it's, bad news with the crash not looking good............ footage on BBC News now showing A Red Arrow going down.... in a gentle descent

There was no ejection and I've seen the footage.  I think any speculation should be left until it's made official.

MOD official announcement, Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging has passed away. Very sad indeed

Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging

Jon flew the Harrier GR9 before joining the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team.

Age – 33

Education – Jon attended Southam School in Warwickshire gaining A-Levels in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He was a member of 2028 (Southam) Sqn Air Training Corps from age 13. During the sixth form he was awarded a Royal Air Force Flying Scholarship and had his first solo flight in a Cessna 152 flying from Wellesbourne Mountford Aerodrome. Following a gap year spent working in the UK and travelling around Australia, Jon went on to read a BSc in Environmental Science at Southampton University. He joined Southampton University Air Squadron and was awarded a Royal Air Force Bursary in his second year.

Career – Whilst at University Jon completed Elementary Flying Training with the University Air Squadron, flying the Bulldog; he went on to join the Royal Air Force in 2000. Selected for fast jet training Jon flew the Tucano and Hawk before becoming a ‘Creamie’ Qualified Flying Instructor on the Hawk at Royal Air Force Valley, teaching both students and instructors. Jon went on to serve with IV(AC) Squadron - 'Happy IV' – based at Royal Air Force Cottesmore, flying the Harrier GR9. During his time on the front line Jon was proud to support coalition ground forces when flying operational missions in Afghanistan. He has also taken part in exercises in the United Kingdom and America. As part of Joint Force Harrier, Jon served with IV(AC) Squadron on HMS Illustrious, flying training missions off the UK coastline. He became the Squadron Qualified Flying Instructor during his last year on 'Happy IV', making the transition to teach on the Harrier Operational Conversion Unit, based at Royal Air Force Wittering, in April 2010. Aviation Safety Network :Looks like it was Hawk XX308.

From a report on another list, it appears the crashed aircraft was XX179, as XX308 is parked at Hurn with the rest of the team.

The MOD have confirmed the death of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging of the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team, The Red Arrows. Bournemouth Borough Council and Bournemouth Air Festival will issue a statement shortly.

(Aircraft callsign was "Red 4": this ties in with earlier reports - now confirmed - and the team's website, which lists Jon Egging as "Red 4")

Note: Previously listed Registration & C/N were not that of the aircraft which was written-off. There are numerous reports of XX308 being involved, as this is usually the jet flown by 'Red4' - but in this instance Red4 was using another Hawk aircraft. I have seen a photo of XX308 taken at Bournemouth Airport today - which proves it was NOT the jet involved - despite all rumours & reports of it being the one which crashed. Looks like it was XX179.
