Saw on Irish mil online that some guy is considering building a UAV in his spare time and then giving it to the IAC, is this a joke? Would anybody here have the technical know how to construct such a vehicle?

It would be an interesting venture if people were interested enough.

What do you reckon?

I'm not a fan of stupid ideas.

If the DF were going to adopt a UAV, it would be better off picking one built by an established company with a proven track record in the field, not something built by a couple of blokes in a garage somewhere.

No matter how good their UAV is, they could not rival an established company in areas like technical support & spares.

Obvioulsy that is going to happen but you cant put down somebody for trying, everybody has to start somewhere.

I think Fouga is right, these things can be made and made quite cheaply. There is enough hardware and software intelligence in this country to make a UAV that would rival anything the yanks could do a fraction of the cost.
f Molloy Do not knock someones idea because you do not like it. Imagine the American Navy, when Holland came with his idea of a Submarine. Good job they listend to him.

Holland built his first submarine in 1878, it was 1900 before the US Navy adopted his design. That's not very encouraging for the prospective UAV inventors.

I've nothing against the idea of blokes engaging in such projects in their sheds, but the notion that such a prototype would be adopted by the AC is wildly optimistic at best.

The AC does not fund the development of new aircraft, it buys from existing aircraft manufacturers who are able to provide the necessary training, spare parts & after-sales tech support. For the Irish design to stand a chance in a hypothetical tender for UAV's, it would have to be the product of such a company.

So, the inventors in question would have to do one of two things:
1. They open their own production facility, start cranking out the UAV's & flogging them to other prospective clients to build up the necessary reputation required for serious consideration.
2. They licence their design to an existing company which can then build & market it.

Either way, it's far different from a group of guys ringing the Don, asking for the GOC & then trying to flog him a UAV.

Who said flog? all you have to do is thow it at him and say "here we thought you would enjoy this"

Also i was thinking more along the way of developing it for the Army for tactics.

So they're going to spend their own money on the UAV and then give it away?

What kind of idiot would do that?
