Great picture, but why is 220 in Carlow IT. Is there some sort of aeronautics course available down there?

Hi StevieW,

When the Fouga's were retired 3 were given out to various training establishments around the country, Fouga 220 went to Carlow IT (see link above), Fouga 218 ended up with Shannon Aerospace (click here for pictures of it in Shannon), and I think one went to Cork IT, not sure of reg though.

3 in Baldonnel(2 museum and 1 beside VIP terminal)
Carlow IT
Shannon Aerospace
Cork IT(or possibly University of Limerick for Aeronautical Engineering Course).

Ex French AF instructional airframe has been dismantled. The front section is in the museum behind the Anson.

Hi Guys,

The Fouga in the first pic, registration ZK-FGA, was destroyed in a crash on March 19th 2004.

Pilot Chris Timms, a former Olympic gold-medal winning yachtsman, and Kerry Campbell, the chief executive of the Ardmore Airport, were killed when the aircraft dove into the Firth of Thames. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft in a spin prior to hitting the water.


I saw this Fouga when I was in New Zealand a few years ago but I wasn't able to get any pictures (as far as I can remember), pity, it looked very smart.

The fouga intended for CIT is currently at the at airport fence close to the flying club at Cork airport. I saw it before christmas, the wing tanks were removed and a tarp was covering the most of the front of it including the canopy etc.  The flying instructor I was talking to said that the fouga was only being stored there while they were waiting for the college to collect it.  I must say it saddened me a bit to see it in such a neglected state.

Im curious as to why CIT is getting one? Are they planning to start an Aero course, or is it for the Mech Eng Dept?

I checked out the CIT website. They offer a Nat. Cert. in Avionics Engineering. Sounds pretty cool. Ah, if I could go back 5 years and fill out the CAO form again!

220 looks great! As another aerosexual I still think the Fougas look special. At RIAT a few years back there was a Belgian one doing a routine and it brought back memories of Paddy Curley, he knew how to throw a fouga around. By the way the commentator at RIAT mentioned the how impressive the Silver Swallows had been.
