New heli colour schemes?
« on: June 10, 2004, 02:57:32 pm »
What would be the best (most desirable) colour scheme(s) for the new helis ?

Training Helis - ?
Transport Helis - ?

Drab green ?
Camo (as Army Mowag Piranha APC scheme) ?
Other scheme ?

It must be some day-glo colour, as every piece of kit they have seems to be plastered with the stuff. Always reminds me of stabilisers on a bike, i.e. "I think I can ride, but I'm a bit unsure so I'll leave them on". Same with day-glo paint, I want to be a warplane, but I'm not quite sure.

I think even in the absence of an overseas role the days of dayglo are over for most of the heli fleet.
The DF is becoming very image conscious so some of the excessive caution we know and love is likely to be discarded in favour of more realistic training so as to show ourselves a match for the rest of the world.
The LUHs might be a bit less macho looking though.

they will probably adopt a colour scheme similar to the british armys heli scheme brown with two shades of green or just all green.

Hi Guys,

I think the new utility heli's will be painted a matt green / olive drab colour, I don't think they will be camoflagued, although if they were it would be a bonus.

What kind of roundels and serials do you reckon will be used?

Standard hi-vis, subdued or miniature roundels?

Hi-vis or low vis serials?

A heli that actually looks like a military utility helicopter would be great.  If we got Blackhawks would they look like the Austrian Air Force examples, seeing as the Air Corps requested an option for weather radar in the tender:

Most Militaries seem to use hi vis serials and markings at home

First of all, Morpheus, WELL DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!.

Concercing the collor sceme I would say it'll depend on the tasks.
If the chopper will be army co-ops it'll be green and/or camo.
The serial will be subdued ( Like our AH-64D's).

If training and/or transport I supose green will be used aswell but the serials will be quite well readable.

the new helicopters will probably be very much in the public eye so its hard to know weither or not they will wear standard high viz markings or will the nature of their role mean they will have to wear more less notable markings.will the new choppers be fitted with counter measures?as in the future they could be potentially in some hot trouble spots?

Isn't it also time they started putting 'AIR CORPS' (in subdued black writing) on their helis ?
(i.e. like the UK 'ARMY' helis or US 'MARINES' helis)

It may even prompt some Irish people to stop calling every AC heli " an Army helicopter".

I would like to see green schemes for the training helis and camo for the transport helis.

Countermeasures would be a good idea (perhaps for the PC9's also, don't forget some local terriorists have SAM misslie launchers !!)

"It may even prompt some Irish people to stop calling every AC heli " an Army helicopter". ..... or worse still is the comment "THE army helicopter" or "THE CASA".  Implying that Ireland has 1 plane and 1 helicopter. In fact every article one reads in the newspapers always refers to aircraft in the singular. "THE Coastguard helicopter .... etc etc"

the training helis will probably be white or something civilian looking as they will be used for vip transport and the boss i dont think would want to be jumping out of a machine you expect rambo to jump out of also they will be equipped with winches for any emergency so they will probably wear a scheme that will really stand out over water like a sore thumb.

What about dark grey? Like the Pilatus? Or dark Blue like the casa? Considering the changing nature of our landscape these colours would make a more useful camoflage..The current fleet of vehicles in use by the Army is of matt green, which in sunlight looks like grey..
The dark green used by the Puma all those years ago was very dark

Dark grey may be a good compromise for the 2 training helis - although it would make them look like naval helis ?

......then again maybe they may come equipped to perform naval tasks !

...although their single-engines would probably rule this option out   '<img'>

Silver, I do not think either of the new heli' types is going to be single engined, see PM .
I think both types should be painted in the same grey as the PC-9's, giving the whole deal a uniform and much tidier aspect.
