Has anybody got specific info regarding what type of weaponry the new PC-9's will be using ?

........or will they just be utilising the Marchetti's MATRA rocket pods ?

Four hardpoints ?

What's the point is in having a flying wing of the Defence Forces that is completely unarmed?  

The Defence Forces, including the Air Corps, are tasked with defending the State against external aggression, hence the need for armed aircraft.  Also, once you lose a capability, it's very hard to get it back again.

Internal aggression is  a bigger factor, remember and while the PC-9s load out of HMG and proper rockets (not the girly matras or Snebs used on previous aircraft) is far from sufficient for COIN it is a training aid in case Gerry and Co ever get frustrated with seeking power through lies alone.

And pray tell me what are the precise tactical circumstances in which ground-to-air attack might be used in low intensity conflict situations in the Irish context? You are hadly going to shoot up bungalows in north Monaghan in the hope of taking out 'subversives' a la US tactics in Iraq. Or would you emulate the Israeli approach by targeting cars speeding through Dundalk? Really the whole thing beggars belief.

Armed aircraft are used in COIN to disrupt enemy movement through isolated areas and discourage the formation of large units such as raiding forces or logistical depots.
They are also part of anti smuggling operations in COIN conflict scenarios.

Hi all
The Air Corps must have even just a token armed capability, for the simple reality of needing to stay in practise, even if it's only with a limited range of weapons.As some of the contributors above have said, the Air Corps are hardly going to be lobbing 68mm rockets down Main Street but that's not the point.It's like the Army having only a token Tank force.They have them so that personnel have a familiarity with armour handling and infantry cooperation and the simple practicalities of keeping tanks serviced, in the barrasks and in the field.They are not going to be hanging AIM-9s off the PC-9s but light/heavy mgs,68 or 70mm rockets and drop tanks and maybe light bombs are enough to be going on with.
