Ireland on Sunday reported last week that the Learjet is to be sold due to the drop-off in ministerial use. Who knows if this is true though.

It also stated in the artical that the LJ was to be used to re-patriot the Irish Ambassador to Turkey however they could not get a coffin to fit in while testing out in the DON, so if they could not get a coffin in, how was the LJ also to be used as an air ambulance???

The air ambulance idea was only a smokescreen. I understand nobody had been trained in the use of the air ambulance kit in any case.
Bertie couldnt get his BBJ so he has to settle for something else shiny. I doubt its being used for multi engine training either...

The Learjet will probably be sold for around 7 million mark. The price for a new maritime patrol Casa is well in excess of that.
I read somewhere that the cost for a maritime patrol Casa 235 is 21 million euro. If you look at the recent procurement of 2 Casa235-300s for the USCG, the cost was 87.4million dollars.

Hi Guys,

On the point of trying to get the coffin into the Learjet, yes, it may be able to be configured as an air ambulance but part of the kit would presumably include a custom designed aero-medical stretcher which would fit in the door.

I don't think the door of the learjet was designed with a coffin in mind.  The CASA would have been more suitable for the job but that probably wasn't available.

Frank.

Your right. but a CASA could be bought with the selling of the lear and some added money off the Govt. (as if) it would not be a big burden to them or would it?

Here's a crazy idea.  Why don't we convert it into a form of AWAC and keep it in service
There's no problem which cannot be fixed with high explosives

Does anyone know how much it cost?
Surely it would have been better to lease it if it was always going to be short term.
If we cant justify the use of a Learjet, where the hell did the talk of a BBJ come from?

Good point Buran !

However, I wouldn't be surprised if a BBJ is on Bertie's aganda again in the near future. He is known to have a fear of flying and won't be too happy at having to use "the old Gulfstream" again full time !

........and this year's exchequer surplus would be handy to pay for such an extravagance !!
