PRESS RELEASE

O’DEA GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR ACQUISITION OF NEW HELICOPTERS FOR AIR CORPS

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Willie O’Dea, has today authorised his Department to open negotiations for the acquisition of six new helicopters for the Irish Air Corps.

Two Light Utility EC 135 helicopters will be acquired from Eurocopter, France/ Germany and will be used mainly for pilot training.

Four Utility AB 139 Helicopters will be acquired from the Bell Agusta Aerospace Company, Italy and will be operated by the Air Corps in a general purpose military operational and training role.

The Minister has directed that contract negotiations be completed with both companies as a matter of urgency and he expects contracts to be in place by mid-December 2004.

Minister O’Dea said that the helicopters will provide a very significant boost to the Army and Air Corps. The purchase of the helicopters is another positive indication of the Government’s commitment to ensure that all branches of the Defence Forces are fully equipped to carry out their day-to-day roles.

so much for 'fleet commonality'.........though I'm glad to see the AB139 picked rather than the EC145 !

The AB139 is purely a civil helicopter correct? Is there a military variant available?

Many thanks Head, I looked at both the AgustaBell and the BellAgusta sites and could only see references to civil versions.

Whilst not Blackhawks, they seem a vast improvement over anything we have and over the EC145?

Let's hope the option on the other two UH's is exercised soon.

Hi Guys,

The AB139 has doors behind the cockpit doors and in front of the cabin doors where door gunners can set up shop, similar to the Blackhawk, and it is aparrently much easier to maintain the Blackhawk.

It'll be interesting to see what interim helicopters are supplied pending delivery of the AB139.

Regards,

Frank.

I am really happy about this contract. The AB139 is a far more capable aircraft.

Ì wouldn`t say the 412 will be used as interim heli due to training costs etc related to such a short period of use. We might well see civi AB139s used until the mil versions arrive.

From the tender details:

An option for the supply of interim helicopter(s) by the successful tenderer(s) will also be considered pending the delivery of the selected helicopter(s). The interim helicopter(s) should be the same type as that offered in the tender competition.

Not until after the contracts are signed anyway(sometime in late december) and it all depends on the delivery date.

This really is an excellent decision. I have to say I am very happy with it. It shows that there was a degree of thinking outside the box in selecting the most suitable helicopter from both categories.
The EC-135 is undoubtedly the most suitable helicopter from the LUH point of view. Slightly larger cabin volume and more modern than the A109(which first flew over 30 years ago), the EC135 is definitely a good helicopter when it's not overloaded with gadgets and ahem, a concrete block unlike a certain garda helicopter.
The AB139 was originally shown in mock up form in it's military variant. Described at the time as " the fastest way in and out of the battlefield" the aircraft is capable of seating 15 in a tight 5+5+5 arrangement but would comfortably carry a squad and two door gunners. Along with door mounted weaponary, the helicopter was designed from the outset to be capable of being fitted with weapons hardpoints on stub wings behind the passenger cabin doors. Capable of carrying underslung loads including the L119 105mm artillery piece the AB139 will not only allow traing for the aerial insertion and extraction of infantry, but also of artillery gun crews.
Obviously superior to the EC145 in terms of payload and size, the AB139 represents a sensible middle ground between the former and the Blackhawk, which is on the bottom end of the MLH scale and is very expensive to buy and operate. The selection of the AB139 leaves the door open for further examples to be bought if the need were to arise.

No one could have called this one because no one was expecting two different companies to be selected.
