Historically it has to be the Seafire during it's Fighter Squadron Gormanston days. The Squadron was a close knit unit then and "very" operational under the great Paddy Swan. They even had their own monthly publication " The Squadron Phoenix". The roar of the Merlin and the beautiful lines of the Seafire makes it a winner.

In terms of longevity, versatility and value for money surely the Alouette III has to be top of the list.  It will be a sad day when its distinctive "whine" is no longer heard in Irish skies.

The A3 will live forever. It has served us better than any other aircraft.

The Vampire, it was the first A/C jet, and it was modern when it came into service.

The best aircraft in Air Corps history is the A3 but the question is what plane is the best. I would say either the Fouga or c235. The Casa`s have done a fantasstic job, if only we could get more of them.

The question was ' what is your favourite plane in IAC history' not the best technically etc.

I endorse the choice of the AIII if for no other reason that it was the first IAC aircraft that most people saw at close quarter due to the type's frequent display appearance at all sorts of local festivals ... I remember seeing it exhibit at the the wonderful open days in Inchicore railway works in the mid 1960s and have been hooked ever since.

Historically,I like the Hurricane (an often overlooked IAC plane),
in a modern context, the Fouga, but the best aircraft and my favourite is (drum roll!) ...............the Alouette !

Perhaps we should see if it is possible to buy new AIII's ?
Do South Africa still produce them ?

The A111 is, IMHO, the best and most useful aicraft ever to belong in the IAC.
...and it will be a sad day when its rotorhead 'death rattle' is no longer heard in this land......
.....but we seem to have survived the end of the Merlin's song, probally the most beautiful sounding aero engin of all time.

All things pass..............hopefully, one A111 [at least] wil be preserved in working order.
Ireland, no jets, no future!

Hi all
From the old uns, the Spitfires/Seafires for their elegant lines, glorious noise and undoubted flying qualities. From the moderns, "my" old bird, 240.I was NCO i/c for eighteen months (with Stretch).A product of the excellent Beech heritage, 240 (and her sisters, sold far,far too soon!) has served above and beyond the call, showing utter reliability, outstanding utility and still slogs away.I flew in it many times and it was always a pleasure to be in.It has quietly served, under the shadow of the more glamourous jets.It has more hours on it's hide than most other King Airs but still looks good.It will take some replacing....I always thought the Alouettes sounded like an alarm bell having unlawful knowledge with an industrial Hoover. There used to be a ritual in "Heli" whereby beer was put in the gob of an individual attempting to imitate the Alouette's noises...you had to be there!

I'll use the Single Transferable Vote System:
1. Gulfstream
2. Lear Jet
3. D/H Vampires
4. Fougas
5. Reims Rockets
6. Spitfires/Seafires
7. D/H Doves
8. Chipmonks
9. Provosts

Perhaps we call could submit a list and Guinness could practice the Irish voting system!
