You are of course correct, P.Doff, and I was aware of this fact - hence the use of "dedicated" in the thread title.

BTW,

The new Learjet 45 is also being equipped with an air ambulance kit (source - Air Corps Wings newsletter).

Silver,
Interesting results to your poll. And I always thought that I was in the minority of one!!  Seems most of the contributors  supported my views of concentrating our resources for military purposes although always willing to give a helping hand in a time of crisis.  Perhaps most people would also support my view that SAR should be treated in the same fashion? Perhaps your next poll!
Kind regards and keep up your great contributions t this site. You would be missed!

Ask Woolie in the Appt. school about his rescue! Very daring considering he wasn't a SAR crewman! It does make sense for the Military to look after this role, over here in the UK the Kent Air ambulance are always on the scrounge for funds, this shouldn't happen to such a vital service, the only problem is that of security, it would mean the area where the heli has to land must be safe, as the paramilitaries have tried (and succeeded!) before to commandeer a heli.

Sorry Lurk, but just to clarify something you said earlier,I have heard of and witnessed occasions when the aircorps did do "roadside" air ambulance.Three times to my knowledge while based in Carrickfinn in Donegal durig the late 90's.
The dauphin was the ship in each case.
Perhaps this was only because the accidents were in close proximity to the operational base at the time.

First time I've posted in a while, nice to be back!!

Night time air ambulance operations are still relatively rare. There are none in the UK. Possibly some in Germany, I think.

Of course, if your pre-hospital care system depends on HEMS, but your helis can't fly at night (when most of your nasty incidents will happen) this could be a problem.

A3 helis regularly land at Cork University Hospital with patients for the Head injury unit based there, which is reportedly the best in the country..dont know how much the current construction is affecting the helipad though.

During the Tour De france in Ireland(1998?)one of the riders was injured in Youghal. he was taken by ambulance to Little island, where a Helicopter landed on the road(which had been closed by gardai, and took him to Cork University Hospital..I think they had a Dauphin too.

I think there was an incident in the 70's where the provo's hijacked a civvy helicopter & forced the pilot to fly them into the yard of a prison to break-out an inmate.

I believe this incident resulted in the movement of all paramilitary prisoners to Portlaoise & the involvement of the army in that prison's security.
