Alouette III's
« on: January 05, 2005, 10:54:58 pm »
After the recent Tsunami disaster, and the subsequent urgent need for so many helicopters, it got me thinking about a future use for the Alouette's.

If they are to be withdrawn from active service within the next year or so, why not keep them and place them in long-term storage.

They would be maintained and started annually, and would be available in the event of a major disaster.
(The Swiss already do this with Alouette's they have in storage in the Alps).

As it stands, the Alouette's would probably fetch only a modest price if sold. However, they would prove invaluable in the event of a major disaster.

Has anyone heard anything further to the rumour on IMO that states the AIII's could be shipped over to Asia on the Antonov for the relief effort, including AirCorp pilots and tech's.

Have just read the IMO post you mentioned.

It's purely a rumour at this stage, and suggests that 3 x AIII's MIGHT be sent, along with techies and a pool of pilots.

Personally, I believe it would be a great idea.

But what chances of it actually happening '<img'>

Might be more than a rumour, I heard that an Antonov is to be used to transport 3 AIII's to Sri Lanka and that the GIV is going out there today for some reason?

Might it be the case that the A3's will be loaned to Sri Lanka or India ? (India already operate the A3)

............ wouldn't surprise me !

Silver you continue to astound me.

India doesnt need foreign military aid, a government minister is flying out today hence the VIPjet.

'<img'>  glad I 'astound you' Imshi !

It wouldn't surprise me if the govt loaned the A3's to India or Sri Lanka as I'm sure every available heli they have is currently in use with the disaster relief effort.
And as all right-thinking people know - the effort needs as many helis as possible, lives are at stake.

I'm not saying I would agree with it - far from it! - but with the govts track record for making decisions re the AC...... it wouldn't surprise me!

Our crews are more valuable than our aircraft, what makes you think Sri Lanka has a surplus of AIII pilots and techies.
And if our government were that stupid they'd probably have a bord failte sponsored Aerobatics team.
thankfully they're not.

Although I am very fond of our AIIIs, they are now 40 years plus old I think we must move on to bigger and better things, not forgetting the huge role they have played in our Corps history.  Like the Vampires, Fouga, Dove, Spitfires etc time does not stay still.  No matter what happens the AIIIs will always have a special place in our hearts.

So what about my idea to keep the A3's 'in reserve' ??

Why not keep using them, just because they are old does not mean they are useless. They are in perfect condition, they can go on for many more years. Plus we are only buying 6 new helicopters as we all know it is not enough. So keep using them until we have cover for them.

We more helicopters, but they must be in addition to what we have. as 13 was never enough to have in the first place.
