RAF 22sqdn. 'ZAP' on AIII?

Why did AIII 197 carry an RAF 22 squadron 'ZAP' (flash/badge) on its bodywork back in the 1960'/70's ?

As a guess Silver I think it may have been a token from liasion visits to 22 Sq who were operating SAR from RAF Valley.

aswell i came across a photo of one of the casas with russian markings on it?i assume it was for some film or something like that?does anybody know exactly why it wore these markings?

One of the CASAs played the part of a RAF C-130 in "In the name of the father".

I don't believe that the 22sqdn 'ZAP' on the A3 was related to any film.

As discussed on this board before Christmas the Casa was in soviet markings as part of a short Irish made film parodying the episode some years ago when Boris Yeltsin refused to leave a russian plane on a Shannon stop-over to meet the assembled Irish Government VIPs at the bottom of the stairs. The movie was largely filmed on the apron at Casement and a panning shot took in a Gazelle and Dauphin from what I remember. Forget the name of the film but it featured the Apres Match crowd.

As stated earlier the 22 sqn flash on the AIII no doubt arises from the exchange visits that took place between the two SAR units on either side of the Irish Sea about this time.

I think it must has happend during a vissit or airshow.

We used to zapp all sort of planes with our squadron stickers when we were on deployment or during airshows so maybe you can find a date that the helicopter was "envolved" with staff from 22 sqn RAF.

In the late '70s/early '80s 22 and 202 Sqn Whirlwinds and Wessex then Sea Kings used to do exchanges, with the Alouette 111 going to Brawdy or Valley for a few days. I remember one of the SAR crewmen telling me on his return that he'd been through a 'winchmans alley' on the end of a long cable underneath a Sea King, they'd given him a static discharge rod to touch the slate walls of the alley every now and then to discharge the static build up. He said he touched the rod against the cliff and there was a blinding flash and he thought he'd been given an arc welding rod! There were always plenty of Special Branch cops around when the RAF lads were in, sad isn't it!
