Paddy's Day Parade
« on: February 17, 2005, 11:53:51 am »
I'm travelling to Dublin for a few days in March, including 17th, haven't been to a Paddy's Day parade for years. Can anyone tell me what the military element will be like. Any chance of a flypast, or is it just marching soldiers (RDF or PDF). Any hardware on parade ?

The FCA Normally open the parade by carrying the tricolour and provincial flags and yes the aircorps usually do several flypasts over the city . Used to be fougas, then marchettis, last year it was cessnas, so I can only assume that this year it'll be the PC-9's!!??

I thought that the AC stopped doing flypast's years ago ?

I never seen flypasts on tv during parade coverage (or on the news) ?

4 x PC-9's would be great !

I saw a PC-9 today doing a fast turn over Newbridge and it certaintly caught peoples attention !

Flyboy,

what you SHOULD do is arrange your own parrade to: the Guinness Brewery, Brazen Head, Mother redcaps, Break-for-the-Border,O'Donnahughs, Major Toms etc, etc.........in other words.:D

Let's have a pub-crawl.

Wich I was there on Paddy's-day

Guinness ''
Guinness is good for you

The cessnas used to do a fly past every Paddy's day for as long as i can remember.(in our area anyway) I"d imagine it'll be the pc-9's this year for the Dub parade,to show them off!!
Guinness'  pub parade sound a bit better though!!!!

I have not seen any report of a flyover at the parade for years ... there used to be a flyover of Vampires at the Easter parade (that was at a time when we were not ashamed to mark the anniversary of 1916 but that's another story). The Easter parade had a stronger military component than the St. Patrick's Day parade ever had.

There may have been a flypast in an area where the Minister for Defence of the day had an interest or perhaps with some particular Air Corps connection, but not otherwise.

Mind you there had been a flypast planned for the presidential inauguration last year but it was scrapped due to low cloud. Perhaps that might be reinstated. Curiously the last flypast over Dublin I can remember was two years ago when the Red Arrows did a single pass over Lansdowne Road for an Ireland-England ... game .. anybody know if similar is planned for Saturday's game

Good point 202 !!

If the Red Arrows can do a flypast over LANSDOWNE then surely the Air Corps can !

.............probably comes down to somebody needing to 'request it' ?!

I can remember a Marchetti fly-over when I last took part in the Dublin parade four years ago. I can remember a Cessna formation circling south Dublin two years ago, probably for the Tallaght & Clondalkin parades.

As for requesting a fly-over, from the treatment we received at my last Dublin parade I'd say the organisers would prefer to remove all DF involvement from the proceedings.
D'oh!

In fairness for the record I must add that the Red Arrows flypast at Lansdowne Road two years ago was, I understand,  at the behest of the major UK sponsor for the rugby series.

That Rugby match didnt have Ireland playing or England either it took place on a saturday and they used the white smoke i think it was Scotland v France but it was definately not Ireland or England playing that day because it was a neutral country in rugby terms. France was definately playing that game. the flypast was broadcast on tv alright

It was Toulouse v Perpignan in the heinekin cup final (toulouse won). It was the year when it was possible that there could have been a leinster v munster final in lansdowne road, but they both got knocked out in the semis i think.

Were yis all pissed early on Paddy's Day for the passed few years. The Dublin parade has had a Flyover every year bar I think one for the past 8 maybe 9 years wheather it be Fougas,Marchettis or Cessna's!!!
And dont contradict me on this anyone as Ive been on the ramp for a few of those years!!!
Do yis not remember the Fougas doing a "display" on Paddys day before they retired?? It was a Shitty day yet they done a flyover then a singleton done a rake of low runs up and down the liffey!!!
