Disposal of the Fougas
« on: February 25, 2005, 10:40:32 pm »
Hi folks
i heard a rumour that 217 is ready for shipping to the Austrian Air Force Museum. The Fouga at Cork Airport, which is suffering from corrosion, due to it's outdoor position, is said to be either repossessed by the Air Corps or to be cleaned up by Air Corps techs and properly treated for long-term preservation.
regards GTTC

Heard the Austrians may be sending in a C-130 to take the Magister out.

Hi Guys,
This is my first message on the forum. I have been "looking in" for about a year now and find it very good. My question where are all the Fougas now and have any been scrapped?
Thanks

Hi Rover1,

Welcome to the forum ! .............it's always good to have new people on board !

Regarding the Fouga's -

220 is in Carlow Tech College
217 is heading for Austria soon (as GTC mentioned above)
215 has been repainted and is on display beside the VIP building in Baldonnel
Another is at Cork Airport awaiting it's fate
The remaining two are, I believe, in storage in Baldonnel.
.......... As is "3-KE" - the 'spare' Fouga.

i.e. none have been scrapped - and I don't reckon any will be !
The AC have learned from their mistakes of the past - i.e. scrapping of their Spitfires - five of which are now airworthy again !!!

Hope this answers you question.

BTW, Frank has pics of 215 (repainted) and 220 in Carlow College is his gallery.

Silver.

Hi Silver,
Thanks for that. According to Irish Air Letter 215 went to Bolton Street College last November. It is the authorative publication on Irish Aviation. Anyone else know where the rest are or is the one that was at Cork back in the Don. I think that I am right in saying that the Fouga going to Austria was originally with the Austrian A F.

Hi Rover1,

That's something of a surprise to me re 215 '<img'>
I thought that, after all the work repainting her, she would be on permanent 'gate guardian' duties in Casement ??!

I believe you are correct re 217 (former Austrian AF Magister).

Just out of curiosity, what are we getting in return off the Austrians?
There's no problem which cannot be fixed with high explosives

Somebody mentioned what we are getting in return (could have been on IMO). I think it's something like 'aviation memorabilia' for the museum ............... but don't quote me on that !!
