Heard a story once that they were broken up in Bal with the wings seperated from the fuselages, & buried within the expanse of the airfield!

As far as I know the hurricanes were part of a job lot of out-of-use[I am being polite] equipment sold to the battle of Britain film company in 1967.
But even then there were very few flyable Hurricanes in existence, far fewer then there were Spitfires.
Ireland, no jets, no future!

Hi all
The story I heard, from ex-RSM Bobby Gallagher, was that he and his fellow apprentices were marched up to the dump, where the Hurricanes were parked, and issued picks and shovels. They were ordered to smash up the Hurris and the Masters and not to attempt to leave until they were finished. They were warned not to attempt to take souvenirs. This is supposed to have happened in 1945.
There were two dumps, the main one which stretched from the Pyrotechnics shed to the windsock at the corner of the hedge, about 200 yards distant. Most of that ground is now built over. The second dump was at the back of the hangar, formerly Maritime, where the engine test cell now stands. They stored the Chipmunks there after they were taken out of service. Also, a shed in the back row, alongside the school, held some scrap, such as the hulks of several Link trainers.
Perhaps the bosses might be persuaded to allow a metal detector to be used for a look around.

Thanks Fouga. Am a little bit saddened to have what I heard confirmed in such detail by GttC, what a waste of heritage.

When the Hurricanes were withdrewn from service a few, about three, were used for technical training  and they too  were eventually "reduced to produce". The mark 2C Hurricanes had very few hours and were originally to equip a second fighter squadron. Spares would have created problems so the idea was scrapped even though a cadre had been created for a very short time.It is true that some parts were dumped and buried in an area now covered by buildings but most were sold as scrap. RSM Bobby Gallagher's name was mentioned, he is well and I spoke to him last week a really great man. The wrecks shown include Ansons as well as Hurricanes and the building in the background is no 4 hangar in the process of having a new roof fitted.

Hi Tony, for some reason the photo doesn't open on my PC. Good to hear that Bobby's well, he is a great man, especially as he managed to combine the two hats for so long! As military and technical RSM. Do you know if he views this site?Best wishes, JK.

Hi John,
I do not know why you can not see my photo. Does anyone else out there have the same problem........did I do something wrong?  Frank where are you now that we need you???
I agree with your sentiments about Bobby, one great person and a great friend for over 25 years. He does not I believe ,have a computer but as you know he was in himself a walking computer. There is only one RSM Robert Gallagher rtd.
Best wishes John

Hi John,

I don't know why you can't see the picture, if you can see the other pictures on board you should be able to see that one.

Failing that, if you are using firewall, ad blocker or antivirus software you might have to configure it as it might consider the picture as being an advert and block it.

Regards,

Frank.

Hi all
Some of the scrap ended up in a scrapyard in Bluebell,Inchicore.Provosts 181 and 184 and some Leonides engines and some sundry scrap went to the UK.At least, the present administration is inclined to keep the existing stuff housed.
