Hello,

My name's Jan Forsgren, a Swedish aviation historian. Together with two US authors, Walt Shiel and Mike Little, I am currently compiling a book about the Cessna T-41/172 in military use. The book will be published in March 2006 by Slipdown Mountain LLC.

As an operator of the '172 Rocket, the Irish Air Corps will feature heavily in the book. We are looking for information on the Cessna in IAC service. Photos, events, incidents etc. Anything regarding the IAC Cessna 172s is of interest!

welcome on board on this forum.
You might find some good info ( pictures ) in a book called" The Irish Air Corps celebrates 100 years of flight" The ISBN number is 0-9546669-0-9. This book is for sale in the website store.

The hoistory on the IAC is in there including some great pictures.
I hope this will get you started.

You've got to hand it to the 172's. They were originally derided in the Irish media as 'mickey mouse planes', but they have proved their value many times over in Air Corps service !

The earliest piece of information I have on the Irish Rockets, is a short article in the June 1972 issue of Air Enthusiast.

In the article, it is mentioned that up to 12 FR172s, equipped with Matra rocket launchers would be acquired, along with some FMTA 337 Milirole multi-purpose aircraft.

I would assume that financial considerations meant that only eight FR172Hs were acquired, but does anyone have further details on this?

Also, how long will the Cessnas remain in IAC service?

There were rumours that they were to be replaced with several Islander/Cessna Caravan type of aircraft although that rumour seems to have died out so I assume they`ll still keep going for a fair few years yet.

T-41,

There is a photo out there of an Air Corps Cessna with rocket pods attached - though we have yet to see it ?!

A Defence Review some years ago recommended that the Cessna's be replaced with 3 x 'Defender type aircraft'. But as futurepilot says above, there has been no movement to aquire these new aircraft, so expect to see the Cessnas about for some time to come.

There are two other books which may provide you with some useful info -

'The Irish Air Corps Today' by Capt Kevin Byrne, Booklet c.1989.

and

'Wings Over Ireland - The History of The Irish Air Corps' by Donal MacCarron, Midland Publishing, c.1996.

Also, a CD-Rom was released in 1997 which has some pics and info on various AC aircraft, incl the 172's.

When you reply to a post silver look at the bottom of the reply page where you are typing in your reply and you will see "file attachments" and a space. Beside the space it says "browse" you can use browse for pics saved already on your PC, anyway i got the Jaguar and Spotter pics off airshows.co.uk. What i did was right clicked on the Jag and spotter pics and then i saved them into "my computer" and then came back to this reply page and clicked on browse and saw my pics that i wanted to post here and just added them to my posts. I hope you got that?

NB to get the pics i kept this (Franks web site) minimized and looked for the pics by opening up another internet explorer. I realy hope you understand all of the above? ?
