Air Corps on the Discovery Channel

Was watching a programme about the ill fated UK vessel ( Oil Tanker ) the "Derbyshire" and how it came to happen when they suddenly recalled how one of it's sister ships ran aground off Ireland and i was surprised to see they actually showed the rescue of its crew by IAC alouettes, in fact i was amazed how much time they gave the sister ship of the "Derbyshire" and footage of the Alouette hovering over her deck.

I think it's the first time ive ever seen the IAC on discovery channel if only for a really short period of time.

Kowloon Bridge,wasnt it?

There is a Discovery Wings show about Maritime patrol that is taken up by the IAC Casa for almost half the show, and a US Kingair for the other half(Our casa went over there to show them how its done..)

Hi there
"Our Casa went over there to show them how it's done"...Nah,I don't think so.That visit had more to do with the equipment fit (and governmental flag-waving.remember the Irish Navy going to the Far East to support a trade mission?) than anything else (Litton/Honeywell?). If the day comes when the entire US maritime asset(USN/USAF/USCG) needs advice from the Don on how to find missing persons at sea, then sailors should stay at home.

An Cosantoir ran an article about it some time ago. Remember the USCG are considering the CN235 as an MPA,and EADS sent some of our lot on a jolly to show it off.

I have it on tape somewhere, but my collection is currently mothballed pending imminent housemove '<img'>

The tv show seemed pretty excited by the fact our aircraft can track, film and photograph vessels, and provide any prosecution with photos that included date time and position.

The Kingair on this show had the radar in a "bathtub" under the fuselage, and the camera poked out the window used the aircrafts wing mounted strobes to provide the "flash".

Hi all
The original crewmen trained on the mission equipment(TDMS-unofficially known as TooDifficultforMereSoldiers) fitted to the Casa were trained in Canada on such KingAirs.Ironic, given that the Don had sold it's Maritime KingAirs.I'd like to meet the cameraman who could time opening the shutter to the flash of a wingtip strobe! We got rid of the KingAirs because, allegedly, Beechcraft would not guarantee their safe use at low level over the sea and that the potential for corrosion from being based "too near the sea"(their words!).Also, it was pointless trying to use them since they had no equipment of any kind apart from the weather radar, which is rather poor at telling ships apart from "clutter".

sealion,

I have the Casa 'An Coasantoir' article, I just never knew about the tv programme.

Interestingly, the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency still use King Airs for maritime patrolling.

I was on Discovery a few weeks ago, they did a special on IrishAirPics.com.

Well, I was on briefly.....  If any of you are watching the program on RIAT 2004 towards the end of the program they do a story on the F-18F Super Hornet during which they turn the camera onto a stack of photographers, I'm the guy in the middle of the shot with the green bomber jacket and woolly cap.

My 1 second of fame!

Frank.

Fouga,
the casa is only on camera for a couple of secs as it pans around the ramp.I think the theme of the show was based around different maritime aircraft.

Head..... you're banned!

Fouga..... if you look at the picture Head posted you'll see two white rectangles just above my camera, one is my press pass and the other is the IrishAirPics.com badge, not big enough to advertise the website I'm afraid.

As for the woolly cap in the middle of July..... I forgot sun cream and it was the only thing in my bag I could use to cover my head.
