There was a picture of all the Aircorps official and un-official patches in  the book "A view from the tower" many moons ago. Thing is that since the new establishment within the Aircorps came into play most of these patches have become obselete due to the joining together and renaming of various squadrons. I dont think a squadron flash or unit flash has been seen since the introduction of the blue uniform and to make things worse there are no patches other than the Aircorps flash and the leather name tag/wings allowed on the new green flying suits. I think its something to do with approval of the patches to a cetain safety standard, i.e are they flame retardant. I may be wrong but thats the word going around, maybe someone can elaborate on this. In my view, it doesnt matter if your unit flash is fireproof or not, I dont think its going to save you if you "crash and burn" (God forbid!!)

Thats a bit rich ! ( 'no squadron patches allowed on flying suits' )

Sounds to me like a member(s) of the top brass merely flexing their 'muscle' due to all patches (bar the AC flash and name tags) being technically "unofficial issue".

Surely it makes sense to allow each squadron wear their patches to promote a 'team spirit' within each unit.... and the AC to the public ?!
And like P.Doff says, a little patch ain't goin to make much difference in the event of a fire !

Sealion,
Sorry about that. It only started happening on my computer tonight. I'll remove it.

But are badges normally worn on a flying suit not removed before flight in any case,as they are attached by velcro? Most flying suits only have the fluffy bit of the velcro instead of the hooked bit...

Rules for the sake of it by the sound of things. Great to see there are still brass out there thinking up new supidities to justify their own existence.

The Yanks wear their badges at Peacetime only. When in War all badges and insignia are removed except their blood group and their name.

In the RNLAF the pilots / aircrew wear the patches as follows.

Nametag on left breast
Sqn patch on right breast
Patches on both arms can be changed e.g exersicepatch like Red Flag etc, planepatch ( F-16, C-130H, F-50 etc), deploymentpatch like Bosnia, Iraq, Afganistan etc.

To be said is that our helicopter units normaly wear their patches subdued while the fixed-wing guys wear them in full collor.

same for Belgian Air Component. left breast nametag, right breast SQN badge and both arms aircraft or other badge. (usually right arm aircraft badge, left exercise/other). Subdued badges aren't used as far as I know. I do have some nice ones from Dutch 299SQN though. Shame they disbaned. loved those BO-105's

hello all
You're forgetting that officially-accepted individual unit badges are a recent thing in the Air Corps.Apart from unofficial cadet class badges, the only official identifying badge was the Air Corps "flash", which is a command-level recognition device. There's more to a unit identity than what pilots chose to stick on flying suits. It's what goes on the shoulders of the dress uniform that counts;every thing else is just icing.

Hey everyone,

Just of topic a little, i was in shannon last week and was delighted to see and Air Corps picture in a local camera shop window where the owner of the shop was selling the prints.

This Patch agruement is sad, let the lads wear there patches and have the respect of each of the unique sections which are present, ive come across some great patches over the last few months here in Ireland and in the middle east.

Regards PDC
