Spanish aircraft carrier in Dublin
« on: June 23, 2005, 07:27:29 pm »
The Spanish carrier Principe de Asturias arrived at Dublin Port today.  Embarked (on deck) are five EAV-8B Harriers, two SH-3D Sea Kings and one AB.212ASW.  It's possible there are others below decks.  It is not open to the public and is believed to be sailing on Saturday.  It's moored on the south side of the quays, east of the toll-bridge.

Did any of the Spanish Harriers do a fly by at Baldonel this morning before their ship berthed in Dublin Port - as there was very loud jet noise around 0930 in the vicinity of Clondalkin - and it didn't sound like a Ryanair 737-200!!

Hi Guys,

Pictures of some of the aircraft on the Spanish aircraft carrier in Dublin Port have been added to the website, click here to see them.

Snapper, there was no flypast of Baldonnel, the aircraft are firmly chained to the deck and are supposedly not moving during their visit.

Regards,

Frank.

Managed to go down and blagg my way alongside the carrier,as its in a private compound(the aul uniform does wonders!!). Ufortunately I couldnt get on as there were both Spanish and Irish VIP's on board. Looks very impressive indeed, pity about were its parked though . Its parked alongside the huge scrapyard on the south side and the road that the crew have to take into town is littered with burned out caravans and cars! Not a good first view of Dublin.
Amazing to see the nose of the Harriers hanging precariously high over the Quay!!
Re the flyover, no there wasnt one but, last evening a pair of very loud fast jets passed over the Don in the  murk heading west to east??? We're used to Traffic from Dublin but Im almost certain that this was a pair. My only recogning is that maybe the RAF were doing a recce for Sunday at salthill??

The berth for large visiting ships seems designed to scare them off for ever. Ditto when the Ark Royal came to town, they were moored beside the scrap yard and within a hundred metres of the odourous city council sewage plant ...

Keeping within the topic of the Spanish visit, it is believed that it will sail at some time between 1200 and 1400 local on Saturday.

They should visit Cork instead. The wonderful scenery of the largest natural harbour in the northern hemisphere, combined with Berths close to the citys best pubs,or if they are too big for the city Quays,to Cobh,a town with one pub for every 7 inhabitants..
The deepwater Berth (9m below datum,265m long with pontoon)there can now take the largest cruise Liners,Small Carriers shouldn't be a problem. USS Inchon,USS Mount Whitney, and RFA Argus have been visitors here in the last few years as well as many of the US destroyers, due to the ease at which they can secure the Quays.

And thats before they consider the bottomless pit that is the Bar of the Wardroom on Haulbowline...

Also is the Deepwater berth at Ringaskiddy(13.4m below datum 485m long),similarly secure, while allowing excellent photo opportunities from the nearby ferryport.

In the last week we have had visitors from Australia,UK,Pakistan,Germany,Portugal and the Netherlands.

In short...Ignore Dublin.
