IAC Cessna 172B s/n 98

In Wrecks & Relics, 19th edition, there's a photo of a stub-winged Cessna 172B at Baldonnel in a non-standard IAC colour-scheme, carrying the s/n 98. What is the story behind this aircraft? Is it used for ground instruction by the IAC?

Hi Jan,

As far as I know it was / is an instructional airframe salvaged from a Cessna that crashed a few years ago.

It was also occassionally used for charity "plane pushes", hence the funny colour scheme.

As always I'm open to correction here, anyone know the proper story if different from that above?

Thats more or less correct Frank the stub wings are painted red and it is/was used for charity pushesetc

It was previously civil-registered as G-ARLU; my 18th edition of W & R says that it was damaged on 30 October 1977.  It's been at Baldonnel for quite a while at this stage - maybe since the early/mid 1980s?

I have no record of it being used as a instructional machine. It would have an Air Corps serial allotted to it if it ahd been, as in the case of the Magister and Marchetti airframes. It was obtained for a charity push(es).

The plane crased a few odd years ago while trying to land on SNN and ditched in the river Shannon.

This story is told to me by an Irish airman who showed me around on the Don'.

The aircrat that crashed in the Shannon was FR172H no 204 20 September 1978.

According to the on-line UK register (GINFO) Its British C of A expired on 6 October 1978 so its flying career clearly ended before that.

The Cessna in question was never in the Irish Air Corps inventory.

Stinger, I do not have an idea as to why it had that number, that number was not allotted by the Air Corps.
