The most frequent visitors to the 'Don'  are USAFE c-21's(i think dats right, learjets!). We also get british army defenders from time to time. The odd US C-9 visits now and again and a steady stream of factory demo A/C have been coming and going for the last year. Very occasionly we get the odd proper military a/c like the two German tornado's we had recently or the french alpha jets a good while ago now!!
With regards to suitability of the runways they can support most frontline fighters as we seen at the ill fated last airshow, but the USAF and other european airforces that have the same policy as the 'Yanks' dont allow fast jets to land because we have no arrester gear or safety barrier!!
But I've seen a B707 land hear for a movie shoot about 9 or 10 years ago!! The main problem for the bigger stuff is the with of the taxiways(and the proximity of their lights to underslung engines) and of course the size of the ramp, a mere postage stamp compared to US bases, although I've marshelled some big b@#$ards on that ramp in my time, especially when we held the european airforces conference here last year when the ramp was like the M50 on a friday evening!!!

Cheers for the updates P.Doff.

However, why do you call the last air show (2000?) "ill-fated" ?

P.Doff, you say "We also get british army defenders from time to time".

BA dont have Defenders. Only five exist worldwide.

They do operate the Islander though, which is made by the same manufacturer and is very similiar in shape. So it would be easy to mix them up.
D'oh!

The Brits "DO" operate Defenders!!!! The islander is known as the defender in military service!! The one we have is a BN2T-4S, of which there are only a few, whereas the brits have the "2S", which is also a defender!! Dont tell yer granny how to suck eggs!! ''

Snapper,
Have you forgotten our Italian friends?

Irish Marine besides the Don a number of foreign Air Forces drop by Shannon Airport regularly (not including the American Forces engaged in the liberation of Iraq): including Saudie and Canadian and Indian Air Force A/C stop over regularly.
Keep cool my friend. Lets hope that President Bush decides to kick ass with  some other assholes in the near future!! Hope everyone is keeping well in the "land of the free, home of the free"!

Just to add to my last post!! Dont get me wrong when I say all military islanders are defenders!! I should elaborate, certain Islanders in military service are the basic model and still may be called so, but the "2s" is a defender as its kitted out with certain equipment for miltary/police ops!! So, some of the BA a/c may well be "islanders"!
With regards to silver's "?" on the airshow, it was ill fated for "Us" as we had to dodge the flak from the various airforces who werent happy with their canopies being broken or their burner nozzles being used as bins!! This was due to the civvies who "actually" ran the show and their security who fecked off at 17.00 when the show was over, leaving us to try and keep the civvies from nicking bits off the planes!
In one incident a "THICK" civvie woman walked straight across in front of a taxing a/c with her child in a pram who was promptly blown away, pram n all, as the a/c turned around even though the guy marshelling had eventually resigned to using profanities to get her out of the way!!
