Airborne 11.17.17: Cabri G2 Heli-Upgrade, NBAA/KSMO, USAF Pilot Shortage


Also: Electronic Flight Bags, SNC's Dream Chaser, flydubai Buys 225 737 MAX, Scottish Airshow Nixed The FAA has approved Service Bulletin 17-009 for the Guimbal Cabri G2 that allows the pilot to use additional horsepower from the aircraft’s Lycoming 0360-J2A engine. Previously the allowed power had been 145 horsepower. The new rating allows the pilot to utilize 160 horsepower without any negative implications to operating costs or additional inspections. NBAA has filed its final brief before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit challenging the legality of the unprecedented settlement agreement reached earlier this year between the FAA and the city of Santa Monica, CA over the future of Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO). The U.S. Air Force is short nearly 2,000 pilots, and is facing a potential readiness challenge, according to the Secretary of the Air Force. Secretary Heather Wilson said that the current pilot shortage has climbed to 1,926 pilots, and there are other issues as well. "It is spare parts and flying hours and munitions," she said.
