Large Picture Comments: Airman Damien Faulkner took the photo from Dauphin 247, flown by Comdt Shane Bonner.

"On Weds 7 May 2003, the Air Corps' newest acquisition took to the skies over Baldonnel, using call sign Sierra Kilo 257. Previously registered as EI - CXS, the Sikorsky S-61's new colour scheme is an adaptation of its original Irish Coastguard one. The first flight, under the command of Comdt Tom O'Connor, was another step along the path of the Air Corps' ambition to perform medium range search and rescue (SAR) missions. It will continue to "work up" over the summer in Sligo Airport where it will be based, and later this year will eventually replace the Dauphin SAR service, currently operated out of Air Station Finner in Co Donegal. Of note on the S-61 is the one metre diameter Air Corps roundel and the tricolour on the nose, which are designed to distinguish it from the Irish Coastguard operated S-61s around the Irish airports." Large Picture Comments: In 1985 Dublin City Helicopters operated scheduled services from Dublin Airport, Ireland, to Holyhead in North Wales, using this Sikorsky S.61N, EI-BPK (c/n 61224). It was planned to shift the Dublin base to a city centre location, but the company ceased trading, finishing an interesting experiment. This photo was taken at Dublin Airport on 22 April 1985.

Large Picture Comments: S.61N EI-BHO (c/n 61822) was the first dedicated SAR Sikorsky to operate on behalf of the Irish Government's Department of the Marine (although EI-BLY acted as an interim SAR machine while 'BHO was being converted), entering service as such in 1992. Originally delivered to Irish Helicopters Ltd. new from the production line in November 1979, this helicopter was sold in the UK as G-BPWB in May 1997, when Irish Helicopters lost the SAR contract to Bond Helicopters (now CHC).
